About the Movie

The Hero of Entebbe is Yonatan ”Yoni” Netanyahu, the older brother of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who masterminded the 1976 raid on Entebbe Airport which freed the dozens of Israeli hostages held captive in Uganda. Using Yoni's own poetry, letters and prose, the film delves into the mind of this reluctant young hero and reveals his duty to family and to the Israel he loved. Film features interviews with his brother, two other Israeli Prime Ministers, Yoni's wife (for the first time ever captured on camera), fellow officers, and recently released audio from the Entebbe operation itself. It is an inspiring and emotional portrait of Israel and one of its great icons.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: [It] serves up its material with an excess of treacly music and an overabundance of glowing reminiscences. This has the odd effect of making his story less powerful than it actually is. – Neil Genzlinger, New York Times, May 18, 2012

Rotten: The events, evoked through news coverage, play out with little tension in a film whose chief concern is to laud a man already held in high esteem. – Sheri Linden, Los Angeles Times, Aug 20, 2016

Rotten: It is pure hagiography. – Ernest Hardy, Village Voice, May 15, 2012

Fresh: A straightforward documentary that uses Yoni's own words - in the form of his moving, eloquent letters and poems - to create a searing portrait of his short but meaningful life. – Loren King, Boston Globe, May 31, 2012
