Legendary Detroit Tigers pitcher Billy Chapel (Kevin Costner) has always been better at baseball than at love. Just ask Jane (Kelly Preston), his on-again, off-again girlfriend. At the end of a disappointing season, just before what may be the last professional game of his life, Jane tells Billy she's leaving him. Now, with his career and his love life in the balance, Billy battles against his physical and emotional limits as he plays the game of his life. And now with every pitch, Billy comes closer to making the most important decision of his life. The suspense doesn't end until the last ball is thrown in this heartwarming drama about love, life and the perfect game.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Filmmaking, like baseball, is a team game, and sometimes even a talented lineup produces unexceptional results.
Rotten: Depressingly, for a plot propelled by a love story, For Love of the Game sure strikes out when it comes to Billy and Jane's romance.
Fresh: Those who have even a small soft spot for baseball's soothing rhythms will be hard-pressed to resist it.
Fresh: It is a romance about a man and a woman, and it is a romance about baseball itself.

Possibly the best baseball movie ever
Fantastic cinematography/sound work (watch it with a good surround system...)...great story, great use of music...loved it!
Not strictly a baseball movie, this is a movie about love of a woman and baseball.
Kevin Costner's acting alone doesn't carry this movie. But, combine the excellent musical score, cinemotography and decent directing and we have a story of a star pitcher who career is on the road down. He wants to go out in a flash of brilliance, baseball has been his love and life all these years until a special woman became part of him as well. This is the story of him laying one love to rest, and leaving one life behind to start another one really. It's interesting, emotional, and pulls at the heart strings. I emphathize with characters which is part of the reason I enjoyed this movie.
