Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer definitely has on its hands a picture that is out of the ordinary.
Fresh: Director Tod Browning, one of the few truly individual directors in the U. S., is a specialist in horror.
Fresh: [Boasts] some of the most terrifying scenes ever consigned to film.
Fresh: If the heart of the horror movie is the annihilating Other, the Other has never appeared with more vividness, teasing sympathy, and terror than in this 1932 film by Tod Browning.
Great Movie Or *Greatest* Movie?
Cornball acting and script, but at its heart this is a great story of a femme fatale and her fate. A cult classic for all the right reasons -- not to be missed! ONE OF US! ONE OF US!
There Will Never Be Another Film Like This
I was surprised to see this listed as a horror film, especially when it just looked like a circus sideshow exploitation flick from the 30s. But then I watched it. This little film truly is something to see, if only for the reason given in the title sequence: you are never going to see something like this in a feature film ever again. The acting is completely trash and the story is kind of sensational, but really that's not that big a problem given the images and and scenes that Browning leaves the viewer with. It's not the best film in the world, but is definitely worth seeing.
One of the best
This isn't so much a horror film as it is a revenge drama. The so-called 'Freaks' are more sympathetic as characters than the normal folk. This movie was unavailable for years and it finally hit DVD and now itunes! Igot another copy to watch on my iPod I love this true classic so much. Perfect for 'Halloween' viewing or any time as this is a true classic. I do wish iTunes would make their movies a little less expensive than 9.99 but, I had to break down to chant "Gooble gobble one of us!" yet again.
