Rotten: There should be a "Fans Only" sign at the door of every theater.
Rotten: To borrow from Jack in the Box, "G. I. Joe: Retaliation" is one hot mess.
Rotten: What's the difference between an action figure and an action star? Very little in G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which features no performances of note, even from such combat-tested thespians as Bruce Willis, Jonathan Pryce and Dwayne Johnson.
Rotten: The filmmakers appear to have handed a dozen or so G.I. Joe dolls to a 9-year-old, watched him play for 110 minutes, and then shot a scene-for-scene remake.

BIG, DUMB, ACTION-PACKED FUN!
The Joes are back, but not quite better than ever, in "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," the not-so-anticipated action sequel to 2009's less-than-stellar "The Rise of Cobra." I'll admit, my hype for this new movie was considerably low, seeing as how I hated the first one, but my friends persuaded me to go see it with them, so I did. And to my pleasant surprise, it was more entertaining than I ever expected. Yeah, the plotting was paper-thin and the characters lacked any sense of depth, but at least it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. The action set pieces were bigger, the special effects were more over-the-top, and the expertly choreographed battle sequences were beyond impressive (at least from an aesthetic point of view). The acting, in particular, seemed to be one of the major elements that this movie drastically improved upon since the last one. Dwayne Johnson and Channing Tatum, for instance, both share a great, relaxed comedic chemistry near the very start of the flick. Unfortunately, it doesn't last (for obvious reasons), but the few scenes they do show up in together are refreshingly genuine, which is quite surprising considering the nonsensical nature of this action film. As for the rest of the cast, which includes D.J. Cotrona, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce, and Ray Stevenson, they really do commit quite solidly to their roles, despite having very limited screen time and a distracting lack of characterization, but it's Bruce Willis who outshines them all in the end as the one-and-only, original Joe. His hard-hitting action scenes with Johnson are just the icing on the cake. Overall, "Retaliation" is a surprisingly better movie than you might think. Sure, the plot is dumb and unoriginal, the characters are almost entirely forgettable, and the nonstop action does eventually take its toll in the long run, but it still manages to pack in enough visual dazzle, magnificent stunts, and corny comedic bits to keep undemanding viewers gleefully entertained the whole way through. There's no doubt that this film is superior to its predecessor, but is it really worth your time and money? Well, that all depends on whether you can sit through a movie that's particularly light on plot and a lot more concerned with blowing stuff up. If that's your cup of tea, then you've come to the right place. As long as you try to keep your expectations low, you should have a fun time with this action-packed, over-the-top extravaganza of adrenaline and excitement.
This movie was very disappointing. There were very few of the original cast and those who were from the first movie were either killed or were more of a supporting role then the main character. Wouldn't waste the money.
Wow, what a disappointment. A great franchise put down by a sequel. Watching this film is hard, because there are so many things forgotten and left out. Not only most of the original cast members have been replaced, but the whole mood and feel has changed. In the first film yes there is action, but there is a story within Duke (Channing Tatum) throughout the background of the film. In this sequel there is nothing but action. There use to be things I hadn't seen before like camouflage suits and heavy metal suits. Now I'm just seeing things I could see in any other action movie. What I'm trying to say is it's no longer the unique idea it used be; although if I took out what it use to be and just judged it by itself as if it weren't a sequel. Well then I'd give it three stars. It does have meaning, but lacks a storyline. It has a plot an avenging plot and the action is pretty packed. I wish at times things went differently, but they didn't.
This action pack movie starts with Duke as captain of a team including Lady Jaye (Adrianne Palicki), Flint (D. J. Cotrona), Roadblock (Dwayne Johnson) ext... Duke and his group are in GI Joe camp where all of the soldiers are. Soon the camp is attacked by the U.S Air force (currently being run by Cobra) leaving three Joe's left (Roadblock, Flint, and Lady Jaye). These three seek to avenge the death of there " Brothers". As they go through there journey they learn that Cobra has disguised one of his men as the president. After finding this out they look for a helping hand. Once they've prepared they bring the battle to Cobra. Soon they realize that the world is at stake and there the only one's that can save it.
Like I said disappointing if looked at as a sequel; not bad if looked at as it's own film. Most of the actors in this movie give a believable performance, but only the U.S. President (Jonathan Pryce) is the only character I found to be exceptional. Yes this film can be a fun ride if you don't pay attention to all thats wrong. Although it can be fun I must say this one is a rent. Hopefully my opinion will help you decide how to spend your time.
