About the Movie

A team of intrepid adventurers travels through the outer reaches of the galaxy, each week finding excitement and adventure on Galaxy Quest! Or at least that's the way it was in the mid-1970s, when brave if reckless Captain Peter Quincy Taggart, lovely Lieutenant Tawny Madison, and inscrutable alien Dr. Lazarus were the leaders of an interstellar law enforcement team on the TV series of that name. Twenty years later, the show is still in reruns, and Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen), Gwen DeMarco (Sigourney Weaver), and Alexander Dane (Alan Rickman) prop up their sagging careers by making appearances at sci-fi conventions, where they grudgingly shake hands and give autographs for the show's socially inept following. However, it turns out that nerdy sci-fi fans aren't the only ones watching: somewhere in another solar system, a group of alien rebels living under a regime of violence and repression have picked up broadcasts of Galaxy Quest, and they aren't aware that it's fiction. They travel to Earth and encounter the Galaxy Quest cast, who figure that they're just another bunch of guys who like to dress funny. However, they soon realize that they're being hired not for another autograph-signing session but for a real-life outer space rescue mission.

Galaxy Quest

This is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. It is fall-off-the-couch-laughing funny. It holds special joys for Trekkies and those who love them. Can't find much to smile about these days? Rent or buy this film and cheer yourself up. You can thank me later.

Proof that a parody doesn't always have to be mean-spirited

I admit it.....I am a Star Trek fan (well, not the super-die hard to the point I know every line from any given episode kind of fan anyway). And to be honest, I am glad they did not give the finger to one of my favorite sci-fi genres with this movie. It parodies the entire crew of the NCC-1701 Enterprise. Tim Allen successfully parodies Captain James T. Kirk, in a respectful manner (cockiness at times and when getting in a fight, loosing the shirt). Sigourney Weaver easily parodies Communications Officer Niyota Uhura easily (pointing out the almost useless job she has). Alan Rickman successfully parodies Science Officer Spock (you know, the cool character and best actor on the show). Tony Shalhoub successfully parodies Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott easily (well, handling difficult equipment and faking his accent). Sam Rockwell successfully parodies all of the red shirts (the fact that they always die on the show....seriously. Try beaming them down on the planet. You won't see them again in a later episode). Daryl Mitchell successfully parodies not only Helmsman Hikaru Sulu, but he also parodies Navigator Pavel Chekov (the fact that he has to drive the frickin' ship!!). Though, I was surprised they did not parody Chief Medical Officer Leonard McCoy (imagine what would have happened. Having him trying to suture up or cure somebody with funny results). The rest of the cast does their job perfectly. Justin Long (the Mac, the annoying character from Live Free or Die Hard) does his job at portraying the fans that go to the conventions (with respect, without saying that they are all fat people with little to absolutely no lives whatsoever thankfully).

Stan Winston, whom I and probably along with the rest of the sci-fi fans will miss, worked on the special effects for this film. The jokes are funny, the story is great, the homages are obvious to you Trekkers out there, and the acting is great. If you don't believe me that this movie's great, here's a fact: Jonathon Frakes (Commander William Riker), Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard), Tim Russ (Lt. Commander Tuvok), William Shatner (Captain James T. Kirk, even though he claims that he only recognized Uhura's counterpart), Casey Biggs (Damar), Wil Wheaton (Ensign Wesley Crusher), and George Takei (Lt. Sulu) admitted that they liked the film.....Star Trek cast members liked it people! So, it's not an insult to them. It is instead an homage to their accomplishments. So, if you either love Star Trek or love good comedies or for that matter both, check this movie out. You won't regret it.

By Grabthar's Hammer, What a Funny Movie!

This is one of the funniest comedies I've ever seen. Alan Rickman runs away with the film as a bitter "legitimate" stage actor whose claim to fame has turned out to be having played a "Spock"-type character in a TV science fiction show that ended decades earlier, a character he is now regularly forced to recreate for conventions, shopping center openings, etc. Anyone who's ever been a Star Trek fanatic will enjoy this. And fans of "Monk" will enjoy seeing Tony Shalhoub.
