About the Movie
Academy Award® winner Robert Duvall (1984, Best Actor, Tender Mercies) is Felix Bush, the “Hermit of Caleb County,” a man so haunted by his secrets that he has lived in quiet desolation in the Tennessee backwoods for over 40 years. Realizing that he is near his own mortality, Bush decides to have a “living funeral party,” inviting people to tell their stories about him. Enlisting the help of Frank Quinn(Golden Globe® winner Bill Murray, 2004, Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, Lost in Translation) and Buddy Robinson (Lucas Black, Legion), Bush goes through a process of self-discovery, allowing him to deal with his past secrets, including ones involving old flame (and new widow) Mattie (Academy Award®winner Sissy Spacek, 1980, Best Actress, Coal Miner's Daughter).

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: It affords Duvall a terrific role, harking back to his screen debut as one of literature's great loners, Boo Radley.
Fresh: The creaky foreshadowing is a big problem, and the movie runs in place for most of its second half, though Duvall manages to pull it back on track with his climactic soliloquy, which sobers and silences the carnivalesque funeral party.
Fresh: It's Duvall, spooky, sly, and sad, who makes all the props and the plot twists seem real.
Rotten: Basically, it's Hollywood slush dressed up as American Gothic.
Great acting; some nice twists in the plot; some irregularities; lots of empathy from those of us who are "of that age"; some great fun with life.
This is a mature story with mature characters. Lucas Black shines. He should be working a lot more than he is. Duvall is, of course, brilliant. Bill Murray does well as the semi-untrusted snake oil salesman. The whole movie is subtle. With all the overstimulation in Hollywood these days, it may take some getting used to for those who see a lot of movies. Get your mind right by expecting to watch a good tale and then get it.
A Cinematic Gem
A quiet yet fully realized story of secrets and redemption. Duvall, Spacek and Murray shine. Lukas Black, a fairly unknown actor holds his own and then some against the greats. The look and tone of the movie draws you in. The music and score are second to none. How this movie and actors were not acknowledged this awards season is a true shame. Rent or buy, then tell a friend to do the same.
