About the Movie
More than 7 million Americans are in jail, on probation or on parole. With the law providing that the accused have a right to a lawyer, and by implication a day in court, the United States criminal justice is struggling to keep up. A key component of the American Justice system is the defense lawyer, a right granted in the 1963 Supreme Court Decision Gideon v. Wainwright.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: "Gideon's Army" is a bare film with no narrator and a minimal soundtrack. That's all it needs to grab you by the throat.
Fresh: Like the film itself, Porter's handful of devoted, charismatic attorneys do a righteous job of reminding people that the accused are innocent until proven guilty, and that the criminal justice system seems otherwise disposed.
Fresh: Compelling insight into the staggering pressures faced by court-appointed public defenders.
Fresh: For all the harrowing truth here, about race and poverty and justice, the film is brisk and tight, alive with everyday detail and flashes of humor.
Like a Gripping Crime Drama Meets Social Issue Film
I am so passionate about this film and cannot forget it. Gripping, suspenseful, enraging, important, emotional human; this is as good as storytelling gets.
Powerful And Moving Movie
This was an emotional and thought provoking movie. In my opinion, this movie exposes only the "tip of the iceberg" of the huge difficulties Public Defenders face everyday representing their clients. These Public Defenders carry a heavy burden that takes a toll on their personal lives. It is sad, shameful and an outrage that more is not done to support the Public Defenders Offices nationwide. I hope that something changes to improve the ability of the Public Defenders to ensure the those depending on their help do receive a fair trail and more than adequate representation.
Such a great documentary that grabs you right from the start! highly reccomend
