About the Movie
A man robbed of his name and his dignity strives to win them back, and gain the freedom of his people, in this epic historical drama from director Ridley Scott. In the year 180, the death of emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) throws the Roman Empire into chaos. Maximus (Russell Crowe) is one of the Roman army's most capable and trusted generals and a key advisor to the emperor. As Marcus' devious son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) ascends to the throne, Maximus is set to be executed. He escapes, but is captured by slave traders. Renamed Spaniard and forced to become a gladiator, Maximus must battle to the death with other men for the amusement of paying audiences. His battle skills serve him well, and he becomes one of the most famous and admired men to fight in the Colosseum. Determined to avenge himself against the man who took away his freedom and laid waste to his family, Maximus believes that he can use his fame and skill in the ring to avenge the loss of his family and former glory. As the gladiator begins to challenge his rule, Commodus decides to put his own fighting mettle to the test by squaring off with Maximus in a battle to the death. Gladiator also features Derek Jacobi, Connie Nielsen, Djimon Hounsou, and Oliver Reed, who died of a heart attack midway through production

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Time for a little gladiatorial gore with your Milk Duds. Gladiator is here, and it's big, glorious and eminently dumb.
Fresh: If there's a soft spot in your heart for the sword-&-sandal epic, then you'll swoon with giddy delight over Gladiator.
Fresh: Crowe doesn't use tricks in this role to court our approval. He earns it the old-fashioned way, by daring to be quiet, if not silent, and intensely, implacably strong.
Fresh: Though the digital effects lack the weight and conviction of their equivalents in old Cecil B. De Mille movies, Ridley Scott's sword-and-sandal epic has some of the intensity of old Hollywood in terms of storytelling, spectacle, and violence.
A must buy for your movie collection. This timeless classic ranks among the best action, drama, love stories of all time. BUY IT!
Great movie – don't buy again
Of course Gladiator is a great movie. You already know that. But now you're wondering whether you should drop another $10 to get the extended version. Nope. First, unlike the Blu-ray version this Digital version contains exactly the same special features that the theatrical Digital version did. Also, most professional reviews say that they prefer the original cut over this extended one. Even Ridley Scott does not seem too keen on this Extended Edition.
Roman antiquity and spectacle echoes in eternity
Gladiator is a journey back to antiquity, and how the mighty reach of Rome dominated the world with power and violence. The character Maximus follows his destiny from conquering general, grieving family man, slave to gladiator and fighting for the memory and honor of his family. Gladiator shows how persons struggled for their precious lives in the Colosseum against the specter of death and the shouts of the Roman mob. The battle scenes and gladiatorial fights were stunning and ruthless in their visual retelling and special effects were outstanding. Gladiator's story creates complex characters and we see how their passions and ambitions develop the drama of Roman life and their allegiances. The characters words and speeches were profound and eloquent, and the stellar cast of Gladiator gave great performances. An exceptional performance given by Russell Crowe for his example of the tortured and tragic hero Maximus deserving of the Best Actor Oscar. Gladiator is a captivating, visual experience and the extended cut provides additional scenes that enhance the story and the music score by Hans Zimmer is an excellent complement to the film. Gladiator will stand as an epic film with all the elements of great drama, character-driven story and wonderful score. The viewing experience of the film lingers in conscience long after the final battle as the sights, sounds and memory of Gladiator echoes in eternity.
