About the Movie
Following the French atomic bomb tests in the South Pacific, an unknown creature is spotted passing westward through the Panama Canal. Scientist Niko Tatopolous is called in to investigate the matter, and he quickly arrives at the conclusion that a giant, irradiated lizard has been created by the explosions. Godzilla(r) then makes its way north, landing at Manhattan to begin wreaking havoc in the big city. Even with the combined forces of the U.S. military to fight the monster, will it be enough to save the people of New York?

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: The only question worth asking about this $120 million wad of popcorn is a commercial one. How much further will the dumbing down of the event movie have to go before the audience stops buying tickets?
Rotten: Despite some clever and exciting sequences, though, this $120 million epic of reconstituted Atomic Age trash... lumbers more than it thrills.
Rotten: Despite all the flash and filigree, this monster movie is curiously - and conspicuously - lacking in heart.
Rotten: "Godzilla"... is an overblown action monstrosity with no surprises, no exhilaration and no thrills.
The hype of an American Godzilla film sold me with the trailers and the marketing campaign. But when the beast was revealed it was an Iguana not Godzilla, gone is his atomic breath which dismayed me a lot and also having him nesting baby zillas. Though the chase scenes were thrilling and had me gripping on the edge-of-my seat it still was lacking the character of how Godzilla should be presented. Matthew Broderick and Hank Azaria delivered fine performances which compensated this much maligned take on the monster film, Ironically, the marketing campaign of this movie is 10 times better than the actual film. However, I'm still somewhat glad that Hollywood made a bold attempt to make an American Godzilla film even if the results were not that satisfying. Devlin and especially Emmerich broke the rule of adapting a film franchise which is not to mess with the basics, even if its your own take.
It's not a Godzilla movie but it rocks.
Despite the title, this is not a Godzilla movie. It's an American movie monster with the same name. But it's still an awesome movie. Check it out!
Not worthy of being called Godzilla.
