When he leaves her to travel, she is devastated, but develops over the following years, into a more fully formed woman, with new interests and a new love - and the possibility that she'll be less defenseless when Sullivan enters her life again.

Fresh: It examines, with compassion and clarity, a young woman's discovery of passion and also of the pain, disappointment and partial wisdom that follow.
Fresh: [A] acute drama of young romance and passionate sex, as well as what you learn when you lose both.
Fresh: When we watch Hansen-Love's films, we're not only experiencing a life unfolding before us, we're also realizing what a great privilege it is to be able to do that.
Rotten: "Goodbye First Love" is a very lifelike film in the sense that life does not often imitate entertainment.
Incredibly good !!
A realistic portrayal of how it feels to lose your first love and the journey that follows. We watch as the main characters change and mature as they experience life and love and heartbreak and success. Sometimes dreamy, sometimes brutally realistic, the film is a joy to watch.
I have watched it twice now and know that I will come back to it over and over. It's simply that beautiful. I get lost in the characters and the atmosphere so much that I wish I was a part of the story unfolding. Not many movies make me feel so alive; so happy, so sad.
