In the midst of Nazi air raids, a postman dies on the operating table at a rural English hospital. But was the death accidental? A delightful and wholly unexpected murder mystery, British writer/director Sidney Gilliat’s Green for Danger features Trevor Howard and Sally Gray as suspected doctors and Alastair Sim in a marvelous turn as Scotland Yard’s insouciant Inspector Cockrill. A screenwriter who had worked with Hitchcock on such films as The Lady Vanishes and Jamaica Inn, Gilliat slyly upends whodunit conventions with wit and style.

Fresh: Green For Danger will give the aisleside sleuths a better workout than they have had for months and it also will rest easily with those who are content just to sit back and let the story resolve itself.
Rotten: Green for Danger is just another proof that the British, too, can make mediocre pictures.
Fresh: One of Launder and Gilliat's most likeable films.
Fresh: A hugely likeable gem of postwar British film.
Love, love, love this highly romantic, fluttering butterflies in your stomach fantastic movie. Wish more unique movies were made like this today. Shows you don't need over the top sex scenes. Just the outstanding acting by Cecilia & Trevor is enough to leave to the imagination. The entire cast is wonderful, direction superb. Have watched enough times I want to buy it.
A gem from the 40s! I can’t believe I had never seen this movie. Enjoyed everything about it, the setting, the cast, especially Alistair Sims. A murder mystery with just enough levity to make you feel good at the end of the movie. Only slightly negative about it was the sometimes over-wrought music of the London Symphony. If available I would have given it 4 1/2 stars.
