Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" certainly has its attractions, but most of them are visual rather than narrative. – Manohla Dargis, New York Times, May 4, 2017

Fresh: The reunion of the Guardians cements Pratt's mega-stardom. He has a shaggy young Kurt Russell vibe (think Big Trouble in Little China,). And Russell himself is a great addition to the ensemble, providing a dose of kick-back, kick-ass action – Thelma Adams, New York Observer, May 5, 2017

Fresh: Like many a sequel to a slam-bang, much-liked mega-hit, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 isn't quite as much fun, not quite as clever, not quite as fresh as the original - but it still packs a bright and shiny and sweet punch. – Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times, May 4, 2017

Fresh: It's hyperbolic nonsense wrapped in the colors of a neon rainbow, bouncing from one artfully wacky scenario to the next. Here it's sleekly futuristic, there it's older than mud. It's the galaxy's silliest thrill show. – Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune, May 4, 2017

They Should Double Their Rate

I may be in the minority here, but I felt this was in every way an improvement over the first. With a linear, even predictable plot, Gunn has freed himself to give every character (in a film chock full of fan favorites) a wonderful arc, some good hero shots, and genuine development. With as much heart as the first, bigger better effects, another all-timer of a soundtrack, and a much, much better big bad, it did the impossible and improved on the first. Michael Rooker gives a performance I didn't realize he was capable of, and I'm so glad Gunn gave him the chance. Excellent. I'm on a high having just seen it, but this is in competition with Ant-Man, Winter Soldier, Iron-Man 3, and Avengers for my favorite Marvel flick. Phase III has been a joy so far!

Pun, kill, insult, repeat

I really loved the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, but I cannot in good coincidence recommend this one.

With 40% of the movie spent on tasteless below-the-belt jokes; 30% spent glorifying genocide-set-to-music; 20% spent telling a girl she's an "ugly" worthless "pet"; and only 10% spent on actual worth-while content, this is regrettably not a movie I would be taking my family to again.

But if you're into crude jokes, Rambo-style mass murder, and you have a regrettably low opinion women in society, then this movie may just be the one for you.

Diluted Potential

In trying to explain everything for every character pair in the movie, it seemed diluted instead of Focusing on fewer story arcs It was like compiling a Game of Thrones season into an hour and a half movie.

I like complex stories. This was not complex just diluted for a Marvel film. They just decided to Smash 6 or 7 story arcs into you all at once. It was a little Ewokie, and they wasted Baby Groots scenes as no more than what we saw in Trailers so that was really no joy.
