Most of Western Europes oil is transported on huge supertankers down this narrow, twisting waterway bisecting the heart of Istanbul. In recent times, cargo traffic through the Black Sea has increased nearly five-fold and the flow of oil doubled. Accidents are an ever-present risk. Every few days, an engine failure, rudder problem or simple human error triggers an alert to action.
