About the Movie

Over the course of one hot post-graduate summer, Hannah (Greta Gerwig), falls precariously in and out of love. A breaker of hearts and chronically dissatisfied, she finds herself drifting away from her newly unemployed boyfriend (Mark Duplass) and drawn to two of her co-workers, Matt (Kent Osborne) and Paul (Andrew Bujalski). Conceived without a traditional script, this triumph of improvisional acting was born from intimate collaboration between director Joe Swanberg and his cast, which is made up of some of today's most important up and coming indie filmmakers. Alternately heartbreaking and hilarious, and featuring stunning naturalistic performances, Hannah Takes the Stairs is a delicate look at friendship, ambition and the pursuit of happiness that heralds the return of a truly independent form of American moviemaking. From IFC.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Hannah (Greta Gerwig), the peroxided heroine, leaps from one hookup to the next, but is she searching for passion or just treading water? In the new generational film movement that's been dubbed 'Mumblecore,' it's often hard to tell the difference. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Perfectly encapsulates the slow-motion, frustrated feeling of early adulthood, when longing and inchoate desire easily outnumber actual transformative events and achievements. – Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times, Oct 6, 2007

Rotten: Joe Swanberg's film wears out its welcome about halfway through its 83 minutes. – G. Allen Johnson, San Francisco Chronicle, Dec 1, 2007

Rotten: The fumbling banalities spouted by the characters belie the prior achievements of the actors making them up. – Jan Stuart, Newsday, Jun 24, 2010
