Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Lacking the wit to qualify as a sick joke, the ongoing saga of Hannibal Lecter has become the Grand Guignol equivalent of a shaggy-dog story.
Rotten: I can't name an actor who could have made young Lecter as interesting as the older one, but Ulliel does not come close.
Rotten: There is no action-movie cliche too rusty to be wheeled forth.
Rotten: In the finest tradition of TV newsmagazines, Hannibal Lecter's penchant for serial murder turns out to be the result of a traumatic childhood.
This book/movie series is easily one of my favorites overall, and this is a beautifully done addition.
Why? BECAUSE THOMAS HARRIS WAS THE SCREEN WRITER!!!
In fact he was writing the book and the screen play simultaneously, which lends to interesting differences. I think the director did a very good job overall, both book and movie jump around in his memory timeline and at times can be a bit hard to keep track of if you're not paying attention.
This is a complex creation story. And its gonna tell you, so if you prefer Hannibal's past a mystery do not enter.
If you love Hannibal Lector and the story-line this is a great addition, and because of Harris' involvement they didn't completely futz up the ending like they did in Hannibal. Enjoy!
Really? People asking where Hopkins is?
Uh….seriously? Have we not figured out what timelines are? This the origin story…not a sequel. That usually tends to mean that we meet the main character as their younger self and you can't really have an elderly movie star portraying himself as a teenager, no matter how good the makeup. And forget about CG, it would completely frustrate everyone watching.
All in all, I think this movie was beautifully done. It might have not been exactly what people wanted but gave what was needed. The acting was superb and I think provides a very visual example of the bloodthirsty tyrant known as Hannibal the Cannibal.
Why is Rotten Tomatoes so STUPID.
I'm not sure what the reviewers were thinking, but this movie deserves a try. It's fantasic!
