About the Movie

Harmontown is a documentary film starring TV writer and producer Dan Harmon (NBC's "Community", Adult Swim’s “Rick and Morty”) as he takes his popular podcast of the same name on a calamitous cross-country tour. Much more than a comedy-tour documentary, the film directed by Neil Berkeley, uncovers Harmon’s public persona to reveal his complex character and his equally complex personal relationships. Supporting cast includes Jeff B. Davis ("Whose Line is it Anyway?"), Erin McGathy ("This Feels Terrible") and Spencer Crittenden.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Repeated praise of Mr. Harmon's nerdy fan base keeps emphasizing how appreciative its members are for his shining a light. Little splurts from an ingratiating score nudge us along. – Nicolas Rapold, New York Times, Oct 9, 2014

Fresh: By turns aptly amusing, poignant, indulgent and discomfiting. – Dennis Harvey, Variety, Oct 6, 2014

Fresh: A field report from the frontlines of an all-access culture in which creativity fuels honesty and connection, and vice versa. – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times, Oct 2, 2014

Fresh: The result will play very well with the cult of fans who've improbably kept Community alive. – John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter, Oct 6, 2014

Colonize the Moon

I’ve listened to every episode of Harmontown multiple times and look forward to every Monday when the new episode comes out. I really hope that I can see the podcast live one day, I missed the tour stop in Minneapolis when they were here.

Ever since I heard that they were recording this tour to make a podcast I eagerly awaited the release, and it’s finally here!

The documentary was recorded over their podcast tour, which I had already heard through the podcast, but had some great behind the scenes footage and interviews that brought the whole thing together, I enjoyed seeing the fans and Dan’s peers/co-workers talk about him and their experiences with him. As a fan I felt that I could relate to their experiences with listening and enjoying his creations (Community, Rick & Morty, etc.)

The podcast as a whole has become a huge part of my life. When I first started listening to it it’s all I wanted to listen to. I was a nervous college senior not exactly sure what I wanted to do with my life, but this gave a place to escape, and was something I really enjoyed. Now I eagerly await each new episode and listen to them as soon as I can. They always put me in a better mood.

As they say in the documentary, and Dan has mentioned multiple times in the podcast, the story started to revolve around Spencer’s growth and less about him. It’s amazing to see his transformation from a fan who was given the opportunity to dungeon master on stage for one episode and became one of the biggest stars of the podcast, becoming a regular member, going on tour and becoming Dan’s assistant. It’s crazy to think how all that happened, it’s kind of hard to believe. The scene where Jason Sudeikis was watching Spencer dungeon master and looked amazed to the point where he took his phone out and took a picture really stood out to me, I can’t even think about what was going through Spencer’s head at that point.

This whole thing was great to watch I really enjoyed watching it. I’m not sure how someone who wasn’t familiar with Dan or had never listened to the podcast would respond, though. I would recommend at least checking it out.

Colonize the moon.
