Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: The fact that [it] isn't very funny and, like its 80-year-old heroic, long outlives its necessary life, is less important than the fact that the characters frequently react gently or like credible human beings to the script's impossible notions.
Fresh: It is most successful when it keeps to the tone of an insane fairystory set up at the beginning of the movie.
Fresh: They remain among cinema's most disconcerting odd couples.
Sing Out! (Best Film Ever)
This is my favorite movie. It comes on strong with comedy, and heart. Not everyone will be able to get past the elderly woman- 17 year old boy couple, but in essence that is not what the movie is about. Harold is a depressed, theatrical, death- obsessed teenager whose life is changed when he meets Maude. Maude is everything Harold is not. She lives every day to the fullest and is a very liberated person. Together they realize that love can make the world a better place. The Cat Stevens sound track perfectly compliments the movie. Bud Cort completley BECOMES Harold and Ruth Gordon is the perfect match for the role of Maude. Truely an "odd couple" these two will steal you heart as they go to funerals, "borrow" cars, and plant trees. Come to this movie with an open mind and you realize just what a masterpiece it really is.
