Fresh: The parade of creatures Del Toro and his team have come up with as this scenario unfolds, starting with a tour of the legendary Troll Market that one-ups the Mos Eisley cantina scene in Star Wars, will make you want to tip your hat in wonder.
Fresh: Let's hope Universal stays the course and gives us that opportunity. People as creative as del Toro and his gang need all the support we can give them.
Fresh: This film is happy to coast on its good humor and brilliant action pieces. Fair enough, since del Toro has taken the poetry of some of his best work and butched it up, creating some of the most amazing-looking creatures and battles of his career.
Rotten: In the end I found myself pulling for the bad guy -- because at least he was interesting.
Surpasses the First...
There were many elements in the first Hellboy film that made it unwatchable for repeated viewings, simply because there was a lack of action, atmosphere, and "scope". However, Hellboy 2 not only surpasses the first, but is also one of the better films of 2008 -- but that's not to say that it wasn't without its share of flaws, as well. The biggest disappointment, for me at least, was the replacing of Marco Beltrami as the film's composer, and using the lackluster Danny Elfman in his stead. Unlike the sweep the first film's score had, this one is full of old and tired compositions Elfman has used in the vast majority of his other "works". The overall score for this film is definitely Hellboy 2's biggest weakness. The acting is much better this time. Pearlman is still great in the title role, as well as Selma Blair and Jeffrey Tambor. The scope of this film is what makes it much more enjoyable on this second-outting. The action is more intense -- though, the sword fighting scenes are poorly edited -- and the visual stimulations is much, much more gratifying. Guillermo del Toro's imagination is so vast that this film can feel like a sequel to Pan's Labyrinth, rather than to the first Hellboy. The story is simple, and the characters once again make the most of their daily lives. There's many hints as to what to expect in a third Hellboy movie here and there, but the focus is set on the relationships between Hellboy and Liz, and Abe and Nuala. All in all, this is one of the better film's of 2008, which may be too much credit. Everything is friendly, the jokes work all the time, the action is heavy, and the characters are all worth cheering for in the end. Though the ending is a little less than I was hoping, I still reccomend Hellboy 2: The Golden Army.
I saw this in theaters and it blew me away. I loved this movie!!!!!
This movie was great. Not only was I impressed by the creativity of the characters but also plot of the movie. I think Toro did an excellent job!
