About the Movie

From visionary writer/director Guillermo del Toro (director of Blade II, The Devil's Backbone) comes Hellboy, a supernatural action adventure based on Mike Mignola's popular Dark Horse Comics series of the same name. Born in the flames of hell and brought to Earth as an infant to perpetrate evil, Hellboy (Ron Perlman) was rescued from sinister forces by the benevolent Dr. Broom (John Hurt), who raised him to be a hero. In Dr. Broom's secret Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, Hellboy creates an unlikely family consisting of the telepathic "Mer-Man" Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) and Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), the woman he loves who can control fire. Hidden from the very society that they protect, they stand as the key line of defense against an evil madman who seeks to reclaim Hellboy to the dark side and use his powers to destroy mankind.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: This is the kind of movie you watch for its aura, for its appealing characters, for its marvelously sustained seriocomic romantic mood. – Stephanie Zacharek,, Nov 27, 2013

Fresh: To his credit, del Toro does not flinch from the ridiculous. But he is equally sensitive to Hellboy's pulp poetry. – J. Hoberman, Village Voice, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Unfortunately, after setting up this fresh blue-collar scenario in the movie's first hour, Del Toro wallows in pyrotechnics. – David Germain, Associated Press, Nov 27, 2013

Fresh: When the movie's story line concentrates on the character of Hellboy and his relationships with those important to him, the film becomes a unique romp, with an exciting yet vulnerable superhero at the center who just happens to be the spawn of Satan. – Bruce Diones, New Yorker, Apr 14, 2013

This is one of those movies that grips you from beginning to end as a dry-humored comedy, a heartbreaking love story, and most of all, an intense sci-fi thriller. The other five reviews condemn Hellboy as mediocre, but with the popularity bar maxed out, are you going to believe the critics or the fans?

A Helluva Movie!

This movie is fantastic! Before I saw it I was extremely "iffy" about watching it because it appeared to me from the trailers as a silly movie, but man did I learn my lesson! This movie has a great story, interesting and exciting characters, and fun in every minute of it. I really was completely surprised by the end of the movie, thinking to myself "Wow, that was SO much better than I thought!" This is a truly great movie, well worth getting!

Hell Yeah

This is a good one. Well shot and executed, great direction, and production value.
