About the Movie
Oscar® winner Matt Damon ("Good Will Hunting," "Invictus") stars in "Hereafter," directed by Academy Award® winner Clint Eastwood ("Million Dollar Baby," "Unforgiven") from a screenplay by two time Oscar® nominee Peter Morgan ("Frost/Nixon," "The Queen"). "Hereafter" tells the story of three people who are haunted by mortality in different ways. Matt Damon stars as George, a blue-collar American who has a special connection to the afterlife. On the other side of the world, Marie (Cécile de France), a French journalist, has a near-death experience that shakes her reality. And when Marcus (Frankie/George McLaren), a London schoolboy, loses the person closest to him, he desperately needs answers. Each on a path in search of the truth, their lives will intersect, forever changed by what they believe might - or must - exist in the hereafter.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: The film is a deeply compassionate, decidedly secular and somewhat plodding meditation on what matters now and what lies beyond this life.
Fresh: Eastwood and Morgan skillfully and slowly unveil each character's struggles and then send them on their way to inevitable encounters with one another.
Rotten: Hereafter asks for no such leaps of faith. It offers no poignancy or spirit; merely an obtuse interpretation of the never-never, book-ended with shrugs.
Rotten: It is sincere, well-meaning and, I'm sorry to say, quite transparent hokum.
Good Story...bad approach.
I saw this movie after it got a pretty good review from Roger Ebert, one of my favorite film critics...
I took my little brother to see it, expecting it to be an insightful, well done, sci-fi thriller or something.
Instead, what it was, was a stretched out, and (in my opinion) a boring version of the movie Crash (which actually was a good movie). In the movie Crash, a lot of peoples lives intertwine with purpose, and it's emotionally impactful, with intense situations and you felt the consequences of all of their actions.
In this film the main characters are a TV News Anchor, a little boy (who is a terrible actor), and A retired Psychic.
The TV news anchor faces a near death experience while she's on vacation and a tsunami completely demolishes the town she's in, almost drowning her beneath a bunch of rubble. (This is shown through a scene that contains very terrible CGI)
She has a vision of the "afterlife" and survives...being totally obsessed with finding out what that vision was all about and wanting to make sense of it all. Her life falls apart while she goes searching for the answer.
In the meantime, these twin brothers of about 12 years old live with their alcoholic mother. One twin gets hit by a car and dies. The other goes searching for answers as to what happens when his brother died.
Both people end up unintentionally wanting to meet Matt Damon, who is a retired Psychic. We follow Damon for most of the movie as he goes about his daily life while people come to his apartment, begging him to contact their lost loved ones for them and he always denies them.
He just wants to be left alone and live a normal life, which he starts figuring out is hard to do. His older brother keeps trying to convince him to get back into the business for both their sakes (economically beneficial).
Anyway, that's what you're watching the entire movie. You wait for something interesting to happen...anything at all...or even for one emotionally gripping scene...but nothing ever comes.
The actor playing the little boy lacks any ability to even have an emotional scene, and the film doesn't seem to do much with the story it has. Even my review makes the movie seem more interesting than it really is. And, I wish I could say that it is.
It had many opportunities to become interesting, but it always turned the other way and kept going down the path of drawn out and...in all honesty...boring.
It has a good message, and a good moral undertone, but it's a predictable one that we would have received still, had this movie not existed.
I've seen all of Clint Eastwoods films and expected more from him on this one.
For the record, also, I have seen many drawn out films that successfully pull it off by creating an emotionally gripping story, with characters you can actually care about. There's Lawrence of Arabia, the Hurt Locker, Greenburg, Crash, There Will Be Blood, No Country For Old Men...etc.
But, this movie doesn't make the list at all, and for once, I'm going to have to agree with the harsh Rotten Tomatoes reviewers on this one.
THIS MOVIE WILL MAKE YOU REALLY THINK LONG AND HARD ABOUT EVERYTHING IN OUR LIVES.
clint eastwood and matt damon equals hollywood gold. this movie is so amazing in so many ways. clint eastwood never fails to surprise me with his directing ability. this is once again a new direction for him and a supernatural thriller is a great change of pace. the film tells three parallel stories about three people affected by death in different ways; matt damon plays american factory worker george, who is somehow able to communicate with the dead; cécile de france plays french television journalist marie, who survives a tsunami; and frankie and george mclaren play marcus and jason, an english boy and his brother who is killed in a car accident. at the denouement, all three stories and characters converge. this movie really made me think about life and made me think alot about the story and it just made me appreciate it so much more afterwards. i expect this movie do do quite well on iTunes and i'm really looking forward to owning this one big time.
Thought-Provoking, Insightful Tale
While this is not one of Eastwood's masterpieces, it is a simple tale that inspires and moves you. I thoroughly enjoyed this film. At first, I thought it was going to be somewhat of a "Sixth Sense" sort of sci-fi thriller, but turns out it is an emotional tale of loss and new discovery. Damon is impeccable as the psychic-turn-factory worker who has turned his back on his gift in order to discover a "normal" life, but who ultimately can't hide from his true calling. This was a lovely tale, told with poignancy and delicacy. I recommend it to anyone who likes a good story.
