Fresh: If you're the kind of horror nerd whose cage gets especially rattled by seances, shock scares, and the supernatural, you're in for a hell of a time. – Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly, Jun 8, 2018

Fresh: It has the nerve to suggest that the social unit is, by definition, self-menacing, and that the home is no longer a sanctuary but a crumbling fortress, under siege from within. – Anthony Lane, New Yorker, Jun 11, 2018

One of the best horror movies of the decade

In 2014, a film called The Babadook was released. Since then, it has been my favorite horror movie. I just got back from the midnight showing of Hereditary and I'm blown away. Rarely ever does a horror movie scare me. I'm a huge fan of the genre and judge it quite harshly. But this film left me physically shaking. No other movie has ever done that. The reason I draw comparison to The Babadook is because Hereditary tackles similar themes- grief, depression, mental illness, psychosis etc. The difference between these two movies is that The Babadook handles these themes in a very surrealist fashion, while Hereditary handles them head on through visceral imagery and raw emotion. There are images in this film that I will never get out of my head. Conclusion: go see it. You won't regret it.

Brilliantly disturbing

1. Toni Collete’s acting abilities are completely underatted. Absolutely talented and captivating.

2. By far the best horror film I have ever seen. I am a major film junkie, on top of that a devout horror genre fan. If you enjoy films that are conceptual and force you to earn the plot line you will absolutely appreciate this film.

9.5/10. I haven’t seen a film I’ve appreciated this much in a very long time.

Hereditary

I...uh...I really can't speak for this movie the way that a normal person would. What you have here is a thriller of spectacular preportions. The acting, writing, and directing is all spectacular, and while this isn't a thriller or horror movie in mainstream terms, it still deserves to be watched as a unique and thrilling experience. Ari Aster is the bread and butter of Hereditary, writing and directing scenes of pure horror and mystery in ways that pleased me. Toni Collette speaks for herself...I mean, she's Toni Collette, she's great in everything she's in. Newcomer Milly Shapiro is...is...just great. Her performance is unsettling and just great. Even Alex Wolff, FROM THE NAKED BROTHERS BAND (CRAZY CAR FOR LIFE) is, too, pretty good. Everyone here was pretty good, not a single dull performance in my opinion. The cinematography and music also compliments the movie as well, but it is a slow burn at times and is a lot different from what horror can usually be, so this might be like a fine wine--an acquired taste, so while I may have enjoyed it, it might not be right for you personally. But that being said, it does have rewatchability as there are certain things that you see a second time that don't hit you the first time. So I'm forced to watch it, then watch it again.
