Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Apparently too much eye of newt got into the formula for Hocus Pocus, transforming a potentially wicked Bette Midler vehicle into an unholy mess. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Aug 15, 2015

Rotten: It's acceptable scary-silly kid fodder that adults will find only mildly insulting. Unless they're Bette Midler fans. In which case it's depressing as hell. – Ty Burr, Entertainment Weekly, Aug 15, 2015

Rotten: With Bette Midler and her onscreen sisters shamelessly hamming things up, it looks as if those involved in making this inoffensive flight of fantasy had more fun than anyone over 12 will have watching it. – Brian Lowry, Variety, Aug 15, 2015

Rotten: Though children may be satisfied (if the witch stuff doesn't scare them) adults will have a harder time with the by-the-numbers confrontations between the witches and the plucky youths. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Aug 15, 2015

Hocus Pocus

I love this movie! I've watched it every Halloween since it came out. So happy we can buy it now!!!

THANK YOU ITUNES for finally putting this up to buy! It is the BEST Halloween movie EVER! :)

Has that autumn spirit

Fall has a feel all of its own. Sighing breezes shuffle confetti-colored leaves across the ground, bringing the sharp scent of cool air to the nose. It's a time for harvest, for plucking apples and picking pumpkins. It's also a time of excitement. There is feel of change surrounding the season, brought on by the restlessness of fallen leaves and culminated by the rush of Halloween night. In literature, author Ray Bradbury is unmatched in his ability to convey the aura of autumn. Books stemming from his "October country," such as Something Wicked This Way Comes or the simpler Halloween Tree, are staples of the season. In cinema, Hocus Pocus sits at the mantle of quintessential fall films. It's a fun ride, an adventure that every child hopes this Halloween will be. Hocus Pocus encompasses the modern spirit of All Hallow's Eve. The holiday is about imagination, escapism, and mystery. It thrives on the thrill of the unknown. Director Kenny Ortega has managed to distill the midnight dreams of the American child and present it in one-and-a-half hours of pure, joyful fantasy. Just as no Christmas should pass without a viewing of Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life, no October should go by without an evening spent in the world of Hocus Pocus.
