Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Hook is overwhelmed by a screenplay heavy with complicated exposition, by what are, in effect, big busy nonsinging, nondancing production numbers and some contemporary cant about rearing children and the high price paid for success. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: No matter how much cash Hook earns, it will take more than pixie dust to fly this overstuffed package into our dreams. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Oct 1, 2008

Rotten: The exposition is so underlined and re-underlined, you could teach yourself to fly waiting for something to happen. – Desson Thomson, Washington Post, Aug 28, 2002

Rotten: Here we get the uncanny suspicion that Hook was written and directed according to the famous recipe of the country preacher who told the folks what he was going to tell them, told them, and then told them what he had told them. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

Childhood Classic

They should have a kids' Tomatometer, because clearly none of the critics saw this movie as a child. Either that, or they forgot how fun it was to watch a food fight with colorful imaginary food, and how cool Rufio was with his skateboarder punk rock style.

This is a great movie for kids who love imaginary places and a fun twist on the Peter Pan story which we all know so well. Let the target audience of this movie be heard, not stuffy pretentious critics!

Hook is a nostalgic classic in despite of what critics say.

This movie confirms that the tomatometer truly does not know jack from crack. Hook tells a tale of Peter Pan grown up into a successful lawyer with his past in Neverland repressed. His Lost Boys have found a replacement in punk rocker motif Rufio who is as protective as can be amongst his own. Hook has grown bored and wants a final showdown against Pan, and what better way to get back at an old nemesis than to kidnap his offspring. Filled with nostalgia, laughs, action, visual spectacles, a hot younger Julia Roberts and so much innocent imagination as Peter must remember who he really is, and where he came from in order to find peace with himself and his children as well as win them back. Hook does have some cheesy and screwball moments, but it adds to light heartedness of this already beautifully told movie. No movie is perfect, and I don't expect this one to be. If a critic considers this to be a piece of trash, then they don't understand cinema or film making enough to be reviewing it (which is why they're not making movies themselves). Seriously don't we normally know a critic to praise a long artsy movie no matter how boring, poorly received, poorly delivered and hardly relevant it is? Hook can be a little lengthy, but every moment adds to the mood and character of each individual throughout. This is a classic to behold and tells a message to never let go of who you are, or what makes you great.

R.I.P.

Buying this movie and watching it tonight in honor of Robin Williams. I loved this movie and still love this movie. It's a classic.
