About the Movie

Downtown Coolgardie, where the flies are very friendly. In remotest red-dust Australia is the sleepy mining town of Coolgardie. When two Finnish girls take jobs in the town's only pub, they find themselves in a trial of endurance. Full of raucous drinkers and ogling patrons, the girls soon realise that pouring pints is the least of their work. Amusing, disturbing, and thoroughly bizarre, this candid documentary reveals the struggles of adapting to life in an insular community.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: An eye-opening, unsettling look at a part of the national character we thought had died off decades ago. – Jim Schembri, 3AW, Jun 26, 2017

Fresh: The interactions between Lina and Steph and the locals of Coolgardie make for a surprisingly riveting drama that could almost have been scripted. – David Stratton, The Australian, Jun 26, 2017

Fresh: One can only imagine the moments left unfilmed, in the undocumented version of this story, which repeats itself, in three-monthly cycles, out there in the red dust, where the men wait for young travellers like mangy dogs for carrion. – CJ Johnson, ABC Radio (Australia), Jun 21, 2017

Fresh: Jaw-dropping, stomach-churning and thought-provoking -- literally always at the same time -- Hotel Coolgardie is one of the most confronting and compelling documentaries ever filmed in this country. – Leigh Paatsch, Herald Sun (Australia), Jun 21, 2017
