About the Movie
HOTLINE looks at the intimate conversations that occur anonymously between strangers. From phone sex operators that buck industry standards by advertising their services with their real photos, to New York City's only suicide hotline that doesn't trace its calls, to the iconic spokeswoman of the Psychic Readers Network, Ms. Cleo, HOTLINE takes viewers behind the scenes and lets them eavesdrop on conversations that are intensely personal. While we are told that the telephone is an obsolete technology, many hotlines are experiencing record high numbers of calls. At a time when people spend more time on the internet and using mobile phones for reasons other than chatting, HOTLINE seeks to open up a conversation about how we deal with loneliness and isolation. . . and how sometimes the help and support we need can come only from a stranger.
Being the old-shooler that I am who still uses a landline, non-cordless phone as my primary form of communication this was a refreshing little documentary about the necessity of real, human voice to voice communication to our society.
Interesting and Intriguing
This is an excellent perspective of what people on the other side of the line have to say about callers, including the caller's personal lives. It was great to recognize how physical health doesn’t necessarily resemble mental health and how communication is lacking in many parts of the country. I also found my own perspective on hotlines changed after hearing stories about how they help people. The Ms. Cleo storyline was especially interesting, as I feel many people have a prior misconception about her because of how the media portrayed her life.
