About the Movie

With an interminable case of writer’s block and a personal family crisis, playwright Nate (Jemaine Clement, Flight of the Concords) is forced to move into his father’s (Elliott Gould, Ocean’s Eleven) retirement community. But a chance encounter with the local community theater group may help turn his life around … or signal the end of his once promising career for good. Marking his directorial debut, Sam Hoffman has lovingly crafted an endearing father-son tale with the right mixture of laughs and drama from his stellar cast, which includes singer/songwriter Ingrid Michaelson, two-time Emmy winner Bebe Neuwirth and Golden Globe and Emmy nominee Annie Potts.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The movie never gets too deep, which is half of its charm. The other half involves the low-key comic performances by a stellar cast ... – Jason Zinoman, New York Times, Jan 11, 2018

Fresh: Clement channels his wry hangdog humor into a slightly more grounded performance than he often gives. His charm and absurdist tendencies help elevate Nate from a potentially self-centered man-child to a lost soul who is genuinely compelling. – Maureen Lee Lenker, Entertainment Weekly, Jan 10, 2018

Fresh: "Humor Me" manages to earn its audience's indulgence, if never its full affection. – Andrew Barker, Variety, Jan 13, 2018

Rotten: The kind of lame, unimaginative comedy that constantly takes cheap shots at elderly characters, and then turns on a dime and begs you to see the humanity in them. – Simon Abrams, RogerEbert.com, Jan 12, 2018
