About the Movie

New York City newlyweds Jude (Girls' Adam Driver) and Mina (I Am Love's Alba Rohrwacher) have a seemingly perfect relationship. But things take an unsettling turn with the birth of their son. Convinced that the baby must be kept free of all contaminants, Mina develops fanatical obsessions with veganism, cleanliness, and purity that may kill the child unless Jude can stop her. With stunning performances from Driver and Rohrwacher, this intense psychological drama suggests that sometimes a parent's love can be the scariest thing of all.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Mr. Costanzo's attempt at rendering the fraying of minds and marital bonds draws on notions of hysteria that only shortchange his characters. – Nicolas Rapold, New York Times, Jun 4, 2015

Fresh: Roman director Saverio Costanzo has a feel for atmospherics, and draws nuanced performances from both leads. – Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment Weekly, Jun 3, 2015

Fresh: A strange, harrowing, often remarkable story of love and obsession. – Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times, Jun 12, 2015

Fresh: Hungry Hearts owes much to early Polanski (especially Repulsion and Rosemary's Baby), but Costanzo prizes ambiguity over tension. – Serena Donadoni, Village Voice, Jun 2, 2015

Slow but powerful

Adam’s best performance in my opinion. Know what you’re getting into and don’t expect some typical Hollywood film, and the experience is great. Very emotional if you can relate in any way.
