Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Sadly, the movie is a snooze, but see it just for the magnificent Hiddleston, who honors Williams' greatness but also wriggles beyond it.
Rotten: "I Saw the Light" isn't just incohesive, but ultimately - and far more frustratingly - incoherent.
Rotten: The feeblest kind of costume drama, where the costumes have more impact than the drama and where the period details serve only as distraction, reminding audiences that things looked different back then and not much else.
Rotten: There's no pop to the story, no excitement; instead of a Williams concert, it's like hearing his songs faintly in the background on a diner jukebox. There's more punch in an obituary of the singer than there is here.
I never write movie reviews, but I just could not let this one go. This random mess is hands down the WORST movie I have seen in at least a decade...if not the worst ever! I did not finish watching it... I don't even care what happens to any of these characters in the end. Whoever wrote and directed this incoherent, plotless, chaotic collection of nonsense should maybe retire from film production...because they clearly do not know what they are doing. Whoever concocted this trash must have been high on something...and it would only make sense to them. Charging people money to watch this is criminal and immoral. Absolutely awful!
I was apprehensive initially, because a British actor was playing a legend of the deep south here in America. To my surprise Hiddleston and Olsen acquitted themselves gracefully.
Even Hiddleston's singing parts were a pleasure. I think this movie came out in a wrong generation which can account for most of the negative reviews here, but as someone who remembers Hank Williams, Sr. I can assure you that this movie was very well done. I can imagine even old Bocephus himself with a tear in his eye watching this about his pops.
I give the movie a full ten stars because they stuck more to the history than trying to flash it up for Hollywood. They brought Hank Williams the man to the screen, not Hank the legend. Its a story that needed be told.
Love this movie love Hank Sr love tom Hiddleston amazing film at least rent it you'll be happy you did !
