Fresh: Dunkirk's plot is fairly uncomplicated. The thrill is in the deeply exhilarating pace at which the action unfolds. – Tufayel Ahmed, Newsweek, Jul 21, 2017

Fresh: Masterful visual storytelling on an epic scale. – Bob Mondello, NPR, Aug 17, 2017

Fresh: The movie works. Time and again, the action swells and dips, like a wave, then suddenly delivers a salty slap in the face. – Anthony Lane, New Yorker, Jul 24, 2017

Christopher Nolan + Hans Zimmer

Best Movie of the Year

Some people make regular summer blockbusters with no story or soul. I’m looking at you, Michael Bay.
Christopher Nolan, on the other hand, tells us all repeatedly what film was invented for without any recognition from the Oscars or anyone.
This movie is something difficult yet beautiful. Soundly supported by brilliant direction, incredible acting, even from Harry Styles, World War II era Spitfires and boats, and Hans Zimmer’s brilliant score, Christopher Nolan once again shows why he’s one of the best ever to stand behind the camera. This is finally the film that will win him Best Director, Best Picture, and possibly half a dozen other Oscars.

Seeing this in IMAX was one of the greatest movie going experiences ever. The screen was huge, the sound was epic, and the experience was perfect. So with that out of the way, how is Dunkirk? Well, to put it simply, it's EPIC. It's a beautifully shot, amazingly scored (GO ZIMMER) and perfectly directed by Christopher Nolan. Weirdly enough, unlike Inception or Interstellar, Nolan doesn't bother with too much dialogue here, and instead focuses purly on the action--and HOW GLORIOUS IT IS. Everything is practical and feels very real, which is perfect for a movie trying to show the TERROR of war. Not the HORROR. Now while I can praise this movie and call it perfect, it is slightly flawed. The lack of real character development might upset some, but then again this is a realistic take on war and in war soldiers don't usually talk about themselves in the middle of gunfire. Also the editing does get a bit weird at some points, jumping from different points in time, which will take you out of the experience. Lastly, people were expecting the violence to be over-the-top like in Saving Private Ryan and it is not, so if you want that, this ain't your movie. So in all, I recommend Dunkirk proudly, 'cause it's worth your time. Watch it, then watch it again.
