Plot Summary

Set in the summer after graduation, Enid and Rebecca are both outsiders in a world slowly being engulfed by fake 50's diners and Starbucks. Enid must attend an art class to officially graduate high school as Rebecca gets a job. When the two play a mean joke on a much older, geeky record collector, Enid finds a fellow soul and begins to discover the complexities of becoming an adult in the modern world.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: By sharp turns poignant, disturbing and hysterically funny. – Ken Eisner, Variety, Jul 14, 2010

Fresh: Give this weirdly humanitarian picture a try, and don't be surprised if you find yourself smiling through the bummer. – Paul Tatara,, Aug 20, 2001

Fresh: See it for Birch's hostile stare and Johansson's devastating monotone. – David Denby, New Yorker, Apr 12, 2013

Fresh: The greatest distinction of "Ghost World" is its singular spirit. Here's a dark, deadpan comedy about alienated kids that manages to be smart, surpassingly odd, extremely funny and mysteriously endearing at the same time. – Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal, Apr 12, 2013

Great Film, all around.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. It is so great because there is so much humanity in it and makes it easy to relate to, especially if you are young person, but even if you are older. This is not a "teen" movie per se but a movie that questions and explores how we chose to relate to each other. The characters seem real and the dialogue is at once hilarious and at the same time poignant. At the end of the movie you will perhaps that sense of loss that the characters feel, something strange but not quite bad either.

A Movie to make you appreciate the little things in life...

Ironically days before I first rented this movie I was discussing a woman I call "weight lady" that goes down my street every morning at 8:35 exactly. I was telling my sister how weight lady suddenly stopped coming and I felt a deep concern for a woman whom I had never met nor even knew her name. I learned later that she had hanged herself after her son overdosed. I couldn't explain why, but when I heard this new, I cried. I had been conected to a woman I never even knew. So how does this connect to the movie you ask? Scenes like the old man at the bus stop, and the man that sells the records. They were all normal until this girl peeked into their world. Then everything changed. This movie truly moved me. It was original and unique. Hysterical at some parts, and deeply moving at others. I loved this movie and would suggest it to anyone who is looking to see how the small things in life effect you more than you know. Beautifully acted. Amazing, witty script. A truly fine movie.

It was very smartly written, realistic as hell- not necessarily the actions, but the feelings behind the actions taken in this movie.its an awesome movie i highly recommed it!!!
