Jean Reno, Gary Oldman, Natalie Portman and Danny Aiello star in Leon: The Professional, a go-for-broke thriller about a professional assassin whose work becomes dangerously personal. Calling himself a "cleaner", the mysterious Leon (Reno) is New York's top hitman. When his next-door neighbors are murdered, Leon becomes the unwilling guardian of the family's sole survivor - 12-year-old Mathilda (Natalie Portman), but Mathilda doesn't just want protection; she wants revenge. Training her in the deadly tricks of his trade, Leon helps her track the psychotic agent (Oldman) who murdered her family.

Rotten: The Professional is much too sentimental to sound shockingly amoral in the least. Even in a finale of extravagant violence, it manages to be maudlin.
Fresh: Mathilda is like no New York City girl-child I've ever seen riding the subway. And I couldn't take my eyes off her.
Fresh: The bonding of Mathilda and Leon may be among the strangest in the long, tiresome history of odd-couple movies.
Fresh: One pretty awesome action movie.
what a horrable cut.....
im sorry, i love this movie... eversince is first came out on VHS (video tape) on VCR... if i had to rate this movie 1-10, there is not a high enough number that exist to score it as i would, but... when i watched it there were alot of scenes that were cut out... and i understand why, some scenes were acually teaching how to kill or murder someone... but there is one scene that i was dissapointed of itunes that they cut out... and i mind-as-well tell you since some of you may never watch it, they dont sell the original version of this masterpeice... this was when marthilda insisted Leon of them being together as lovers, but Leon explains why his past haunts him of his past lover, who was murdered by her father. the father killed his daughter and then was let out of jail two days later. Waiting for the right moment, Leon then made his first hit on the father who killed his own daughter and then escaped to America... up to that conversation and then on, emotions still burn inside of him, and then he said that he was not able to be a good lover... after that, marthilda compromises and asked leon to share the bed with her from now on, instead of sleeping on the chair... from there the scene jumps to where they wake up in the morning... there was alot of feeling in the scenes they took out, it used to be a movie i'd love to watch over, and over and over... but now the story is all chopped and mediocre... like a disney movie....

This is one of the most outstanding films ever released. The acting, dialogue and undertones are amazing. I was gifted this film when it was ffirst released and have watched it many times and still find something to amaze me. Luc Besson is outstanding as is Gary Oldman however Natallie Portman will blow you away. The smoking scene on the stairs is excellent. Personally, I only ever watch films for pure entertainment and not in depth analysis yet this one woke me up to more than just losing 2 hours of my time. Enjoy
The reviews here are surprising. This film has a cult following, and is on a par with some of the greatest Westerns ever made (no, it is not a Western - but the hero concept is the same), including anyone who likes the Clint Eastwood genre. Top-quality acting by all involved and excellent directing. A steller performance by what might have been Natalie Portman's first role. Perhaps Luc Besson's finest work. I can assure you will not be disapointed.
