About the Movie

Planes reported missing in 1945 suddenly appear in the Mojave desert. A commercial flight is buzzed by a 'bright' object that the pilot 'wouldn't know how to describe'. Roy Neary, while working one night, has a Close Encounter... The US Government determine where the visitors plan to land and create an elaborate cover-up to keep people away. However, a group of people, including Neary, share a vision which draws them to the place and a meeting with new, and old, friends.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The best -- the most elaborate -- 1950's science fiction movie ever made, a work that borrows its narrative shape and its concerns from those earlier films, but enhances them with what looks like the latest developments in movie and space technology. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Jun 23, 2015

Fresh: [Spielberg's] new movie is richer and more ambitious than Jaws, and it reaches the viewer at a far more profound level than Star Wars. – Frank Rich, TIME Magazine, Aug 22, 2014

Fresh: A daring film concept which in its special and technical effects has been superbly realized. – A.D. Murphy, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: To get to the bottom line with minimum delay, Close Encounters of the Third Kind is a terrific movie, with every possibility of equaling the box office popularity of Star Wars. – Arthur Knight, Hollywood Reporter, Nov 15, 2016

creativity and madness

This is a great, foundational work of science fiction. Beyond this, what happens to Richard Dreyfuss's character explores a lot about what it is to be inspired and creative, and how people respond to that creative passion. If they believe in you, they support you even when they don't understand. If they don't believe in you, they will think you're mad and try to run far and fast. There are many times in my life when this film has lept to mind when I see people react to someone different, who is so passionate they are possibly unhinged. This aspect of the film could serve as its own movie, but twisting this theme so that the inspiration is not for art or science, but for something even more foriegn and strange, is brilliant.

I traveled to Devil's Tower where they filmed this and they show it every night. It's a truly amazing when you watch it there. I highly reccomend seeing it there.

An optimistic view for a change.

One of Spielberg's best. Like E.T. it gives an optimistic view of contact with Alien life as opposesed to the doom and gloom of Independence Day and War of the Worlds (Spielberg's homage to 9-11). In a way this film, like E.T., is about the loneliness and isolation of suburban living and the longing to escape. The main character Neary actually abandons his family at the end of Close Encounters because they could never really understand where he was at this moment in his life. It has one of the most clever storylines for a Science Fiction film while maintaining that wide-screen blockbuster feel. No one is killed in this movie, instead it is about the wonderment of the age old question "are we alone in the Universe"? A modern Classic.
