Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Several of the characters in Dune are psychic, which puts them in the unique position of being able to understand what goes on in the movie. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: Most sci-fi movies offer escape, a holiday from homework, but Dune is as difficult as a final exam. You have to cram for it. – Richard Corliss, TIME Magazine, Jul 18, 2011

Fresh: Dune is a huge, hollow, imaginative and cold sci-fi epic. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 18, 2011

Fresh: It's not for everyone, but if you don't mind the brain-bending confusion of the plot and occasional feeling of '80s high camp, this isn't as bad as its detractors would have it. – Ian Nathan, Empire Magazine, Jul 18, 2011

Dune, Forget it, find the Sci-Fi Channel Mini-Series instead

When I saw this in the theatres I thought it was pretty good, dark and visually weird, but interesting. My wife had read the book and was insulted by what was left out, and how utterly empty is was, so I read the book. As a stand alone it was ok, but after reading the book and the books that followed, it was obvious they had eliminated at least 2/3 of the story. Since then I have seen a directors cut that fills in a lot of the missing information, but it still left you wondering what happened. Frank Herbert was rolling in his grave. A few years back the Sci-Fi channel ran a full blown mini-series that captured the story, the imagery, and the underlying themes that were missing from the motion pictures. They followed it up with Children of Dune which included the books Children of Dune and Dune Messiah and although the effects were not up to motion picture standards due to cost issues, the themes and stories are filled out and for the most part complete. I cannot recommend this movie to anyone who has read the book(s), but if you want a fairly good sci-fi story, go for it. If you want a more complete vision of Frank Herbert's universe...go to Sci-Fi and order the DVD!!

The underrated classic!!

This movie is a classic even though it is quite tough to understand what is going on at some points. The visuals are stunning especially the sandworms!!! The music by Toto is quite possibly one of the best soundtracks to a movie ever. A must see for Sci-Fi fans!!
