About the Movie

Pressured by a greedy uncle (Brian Cox) and a pile of debt, lovable loser Steve Barker (Johnny Knoxville) resorts to an unthinkable, contemptible, just-crazy-enough-to-work scheme. He pretends to be mentally challenged to rig the upcoming Special Olympics and bring home the gold. But when Steve's fellow competitors get wise to the con, they inspire him to rise to the greatest challenge of all: becoming a better person. Produced by the fearless Farrelly Brothers (There's Something About Mary, Shallow Hal), The Ringer will keep you smiling all the way to the finish line!

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Knoxville's willingness to go to any length to humiliate himself for a laugh actually serves his guilt-ridden character, but the movie's real stars are the Special Olympians, who aren't trying to be inspirational or even likable, just funny. – Gary Susman, Entertainment Weekly, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: An uncomfortable intermingling of message movie and gross-out comedy, a sporadically funny vehicle that indicts its audience for laughing. Come on, guys. You can't have your fun and eat it too. – Akiva Gottlieb, Village Voice, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: In striving to be fair beyond reproach, this movie misses many chances to be funnier. Good comedy doesn't make that choice, and great comedy doesn't have to. – Janice Page, Boston Globe, Nov 24, 2011

Rotten: You could make a very funny comedy about a guy who pretends to be retarded so he can win the Special Olympics, but The Ringer isn't it. – Kyle Smith, New York Post, Jun 24, 2010
