About the Movie
A harrowing, coming-of-age story based on the best selling novel by Janet Fitch. Twelve-year-old Astrid (Alison Lohman "The Thirteenth Floor," TV's "Pasadena") shares an idyllic life with her mother Ingrid (Oscar-nominated Michelle Pfeiffer "I Am Sam," "What Lies Beneath"), a beautiful and free-spirited artist. Alone to struggle to become her own person, she goes through foster home after foster home experiencing forbidden love, religion, near-death experiences, drugs, starvation and how it feels to be loved. Also starring Emmy and Golden Globe-nominee Robin Wright Penn ("Unbreakable," "Forrest Gump"), Oscar and Golden Globe-winner Renee Zellweger ("Cold Mountain," "Chicago"), Emmy and Golden Globe-nominee Noah Wyle ("Enough," TV's "ER"), Taryn Manning ("Crossroads," "Crazy/Beautiful"), Patrick Fugit ("Almost Famous"), Billy Connolly ("Indecent Proposal") and produced by John Wells (TV's "The West Wing," "ER"). Pfeiffer received a SAG Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress and the New York Times says this film is "...superbly acted from top to bottom...!"

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: At its best it offers pleasures similar to those of 1940s women's melodramas.
Rotten: What should have been a guaranteed weepie is never truly moving.
Fresh: It's Lohman's poise in carrying this unwieldy story that impresses you the most at the movie's end.
Fresh: Some of the year's most arresting female performances justify White Oleander.
This is a really good movie that is very faithful to the book. The book is a must read!
Moving, amazing, and unique
This movie has to be one of the best films I have ever seen. It goes further than any movie like it. The retrospective tone and the moving plot captures and enraptures the viewer. I would recommend this movie in a heartbeat to anyone.
Sad yet fulfilling
Great acting by Lohman. Zellweger has a smaller role but she adds just enough to shine. Very moving.
