Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: The film's few moments of hilarity are no less welcome for being completely unintended...
Rotten: Give Eragon a few years: By then, it might be delightfully bad.
Rotten: ...Takes an already derivative plot and guts it like so many Urgals.
Rotten: Paolini was 15 when he began writing Eragon, and the book's epic imagination reflects its creator's precocious youth. What a shame a bunch of grownups had to step in and muck it all up.
Great book, sad movie
This is a great movie if you never read the book. The directer went through the book to fast leaving out very important things such as important stops both Eragon and Brom made to meet important key characters later on in the book. Dont want to spoil the other books incase someone hasn't read them, but the Urgals were horrible, they had horns and tails...not humans. Also missed how they found out Sapheria's name, she didnt grow up "magically" then told him....him and Brom tried to figure it out by making a list, also, the Dwarves are seen in the movie, but the story line does not introduce them at all, also the Dwarves city, Farthen Dur, is underground, not with a giant sun roof. even more importantly they messed up how Eragon and the shade faught in the end, the outcomes that the movie had wont allow and accurare story line if the second book is make. its depressing how they messed with all the important details that made the book so great, but as i said, great movie if you never read the book
I am sorry, but this was a terrible movie. and i mean terrible! nothing from this movie was genuine with the book. i can't believe Christopher let this happen. Anyway, the acting is ok...but the biggest thing was, it looked like the film was under budget or the producer did a terrible job coaching this movie. it seemed like they spent way to much time on worrying about the graphics and having all these amazing shots, but what good is that if the storyline is corrupted? If you are considering about buying this movie, don't waste your money on this!
In my opinion, this movie should never have been made.
Now am I being a little harsh? I don't really think so. One of the most overused phrazes when talking about movies based on hit books is: "The book is much better." This will always be the case, from Lord of the Rings to Narnia, you can never cover all of the information and feeling of a book in a two hour film. That being said, I also have to say that Eragon the movie is NOTHING like the book. As a fan of the Inheritance Series since it first came out, it was actually painful for me to watch this move. Carvahall gets burned down, meaning that Sloan, Katrina, and Roran were killed in the attack. Saphira grows up instantly, and so the audience misses the importance of her growing up. And she doesn't trust Brom at first, which never happens in the books because she knows who he is. And the worst of all is that the Razac are killed, which ruins any hope of more movies. Noticed how the second hasn't even been planned to be filmed? The reason for that is simple: after ruining it this badly, there is no hope that they can make another. This movie is based on the book, and hence needs to be reviewed as such. After watching this, the only thing I can tell the director knew about Eragon is the bare-most details, and nothing of the overall story. I'm sorry, but this film ruined the story, and is a shame upon the books. I regret that this was ever filmed. I'm sorry if I come out harsh. But read the books, and you'll know what I mean.
