Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Carroll Ballard's feature debut is rich in adventure, suspense and mythical elements and marks the prize-winning short-subjects director as a major talent.
Fresh: The film represents a studied, sophisticated approach to instinctual emotions: it's carefully, calculatingly naive, and amazingly it works.
Fresh: Deepens into a far more powerful entertainment through matchless cinematography and talented supporting players.
Fresh: A magnificently well-crafted movie.
When this movie came out my mom took me to see it in the theater. It was such a great movie. To now see it through older eyes i still wish i was that little kid. There are a lot of cute movies about animals and the bonds with children, there is no better then the black stallion! Movies of yesteryear have a warmth to them. Today's movies seem to always have someone talking. You can seriously get lost in this movie.
The Black Stallion
To "read the book" : the Arabian horse who portrayed the black stallion was NOT a mare! He was indeed a stallion named Cassole'. I don't know where you got that information, but yes, he was a brown and not black, but no matter. I read the whole series if books by Walter Farley as a child, and Francis Ford Coppola portrayed it beautifully, powerfully, and true to the book. The cinematography is spectacular and the music is wonderful. I bought this movie as soon as my daughter was old enough to appreciate it. The island portion of the movie(including scene during final credits) is simply breathtaking.
The Black Stallion
A simply beautiful movie. It really captures the horse from the horse lovers point of view. It's not to be looked at as a realistic film, but something to get lost in. I read all of Farley's books as a child and I feel the movie did it justice. My breath still catches in my throat at the emotional intelligence of the filming. FYI- the stud was an Arab named Cass Ole, he WAS a stud, he WAS a true black save for a star and white fetlocks which were dyed. He also had extensions sewed into his mane and forelock. I met this horse in 1988 or so at a equine expo in Tacoma. He was just the same as he looked in the movie.
