Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A branded piece of shiny seasonal entertainment. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Zemeckis' film preserves much of Dickens' original dialogue and detail while amplifying the utter ethereal strangeness of the ghosts. – Amy Biancolli, San Francisco Chronicle, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: You don't identify with Scrooge at any point, nor is blatant fakery scary. Picture The Seventh Seal with sock puppets. – Kyle Smith, New York Post, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: It's a heartwarmer that doesn't have much of a heart itself. – Michael O'Sullivan, Washington Post, Jul 7, 2010

A visual masterpiece!

Robert Zemeckis really knows how to combine astounding visuals with story and heart. He's already proven this with "Beowulf" and "The Polar Express". "A Christmas Carol" is no exception. The motion capture performances by Jim Carrey and the supporting cast are near-realistic looking. The story is pretty sad for a majority of the film, but has nice bits of humor here and there, ultimately becoming a very joyous ending. The film can be pretty scary in a few parts, but it's still family-friendly. In conclusion, "A Christmas Carol" is another brilliant job by Robert. If you like visual thrills, laughs, and feel like your heart could use warming, watch "A Christmas Carol". Two thumbs up.
