Plot Summary

A has-been coach, Bill (Sam Rockwell), is given a shot at redemption when his old friend and high school principal (Rob Corddry) asks him to coach the high school girls’ basketball team. Bill is hungry to coach but he has mixed feelings about leading a girl’s team - frankly, he thinks it’s beneath him. But slowly, he and the girls forge a strong bond as underdogs that rebound from a string of early-season losses to make it to the sectional finals.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: In its final lap The Winning Season collapses into a sentimental farce that even Mr. Rockwell, now playing the clown, cannot redeem from cringe-inducing hokum. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Sep 3, 2010

Fresh: The story deepens through the clownish, heartbreaking exertions of Rockwell's gruff misfit, still working things out at the final buzzer. – Sheri Linden, Los Angeles Times, Sep 2, 2010

Rotten: A predictable and cliched dramady. – Kirk Honeycutt, Hollywood Reporter, Sep 3, 2010

Fresh: The Winning Season respects its misfits (and its audience) by not stripping away their foibles in the service of sports-movie cliches. – Melissa Anderson, Village Voice, Aug 31, 2010

Awesome Emma

Emma Roberts was great in this movie and in it alot I like how Abby(roberts) was somehow like his daughter and how the movie turns out

The winning season

Well this is a good movie and I like Emma roberts and the things she thinks

Thw Winning Season

Yes the story is cliched, but Sam Rockwell makes the movie more enjoyable with his laid back and darkly hilarious attitude. It is a movie not to be taken seriously, and to be watched on those rainy days when there is nothing else to do.
