Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: If the movie, which starts out shakily, improves in the second half, it is a discombobulated grab bag of jokes peopled with characters who have little emotional resonance. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Feb 11, 2011

Rotten: What is there to say about a movie that beats its eccentric premise to the ground in the first scene, and doesn't stop? – Christy Lemire, Associated Press, Feb 11, 2011

Fresh: "Toy Story" goes Shakespearean in this animated retelling of the tale of the star-crossed lovers of Verona. – Ken Marks, New Yorker, Mar 7, 2011

Fresh: Uneven is the course, as the Bard might say, but the ride is plenty of fun. – Rafer Guzman, Newsday, Aug 22, 2011

Not a personal favorite, but it has its good moments...

Disney has been cranking out some great movies lately, including Princess and the Frog, Toy Story 3, and Tangled, so I was equally excited to see this one. The Shakespearian theme is an interesting idea, if not also ambitious, and I know many people were wondering how in the world they could handle the themes of Romeo and Juliet in a way that's suitable for children. They definitely succeeded at keeping it generally light for the young ones, with some funny moments mixed in, but as an adult viewer, I didn't feel the same magic that I did while watching the the three above listed movies. Adults may get bored quickly, and some of of the disputes between the two "gnome families" might be above kids' heads, but again, there's no inappropriate material to worry about, the Elton John music fits in nicely, and it's worth at least one viewing.
