About the Movie
Golden Globe® nominee Ewan McGregor (Star Wars I, II, III), Academy Award® nominee Christopher Plummer (Inside Man), and Mélanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds) star in Beginners, an uplifting comedy about how funny and transformative life can be. When graphic designer Oliver (McGregor) meets free-spirited Anna (Laurent) shortly after his father (Plummer) has passed away, Oliver realizes just how much of a beginner he is when it comes to long-lasting romantic love. Memories of his father, who, following the death of his wife of 45 years, came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life, encourage Oliver to open himself up to the potential of a true relationship. Inspired by writer/director Mike Mills’ own father, it’s an original love story that critics cheer is “smart, poignant and often hilarious!” (Karen Durbin, Elle)

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: "Beginners" is warm and revealing and bittersweet, if a trifle all over the place stylistically and thematically.
Fresh: Mike Mills treats love and loss with a disarming tenderness and a refusal of sentimentality that make Beginners, his second feature, something of an anomaly among male identity flicks. What a finely wrought, wryly funny, transcendently sad movie this is.
Fresh: A quietly moving, delicately mounted romantic drama that touches the heart with resorting to melodrama or an over-reliance on conflict.
Rotten: One can only regret this writer-director's decision to cram so much material into the mix that some fine understated performances, and much of the film's emotional impact, are obscured along the way.
One of the best Woody Allen movies he hasn't made in years
Rotten Tomatoes is usually so generous, but this time 'round they're about &10 too low. This movie is the definition of a %93 flick.
To clarify, two Woody Allen classics. I'd put ANNIE HALL at %93. I say %93 because as good as ANNIE and BEGINNERS are, you're left feeling it still missed that final something that makes it's awe-inspiring. Woody's MANHATTAN has it.
But %93 percent today is about %45 better than most movies, so this movie beggar won't be a cinematic chooser. The casting was delicious, the acting reserved, the story timeline out of sequence but never annoyingly so, the subject matter (art, love, marriage, sexuality, being jewish) so Woody Allen and yet so fresh somehow as well. Woody keeps coming up in this review because there are Woody nods everywhere in the movie, but never in an over obvious way, outside of the music selections.
BEGINNERS is simply a solid little movie of admirable artful understatement.
This movie was extremely well done. However, I will caution you that the description is a bit misleading. If you've lost a parent to cancer, in the recent or distant past, beware, as this may not be as "uplifting" or "comedic" as you may hope.
This movie is magic! I loved every second! Great story and great filmmaking!
