Plot Summary

From the Oscar®-winning team behind MAN ON WIRE comes the fascinating story of Nim, the chimpanzee who became the focus of a landmark 1970s experiment to prove an ape could learn to communicate with language—if raised and nurtured like a human child. But as Nim's natural instincts take over and the humans around him fail to protect him, things do not go according to plan in this insightful and unflinching story of one animal's remarkable interaction with human society.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: This haunting life story is an exquisite example of non-fiction filmmaking as full-bodied, emotionally complex drama. – David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter, Jan 4, 2012

Fresh: Tales of the attacks Nim inflicted on his many carers are horrific, but there is a pervasive sense there was nothing else they could have expected. – Jim Schembri, The Age (Australia), Oct 18, 2011

Fresh: Project Nim nimbly serves up a profoundly sad tale that raises as many thought-provoking questions as it answers. – Leah Rozen, TheWrap, Dec 9, 2011

Fresh: The film teases us with a paradox: arguably Nim's keepers were wrong to try to endow their protege with human attributes, but can we empathise with his suffering without making the same mistake? – Jake Wilson, The Age (Australia), Sep 30, 2011

Traumatizing

This is a remarkably well made film. Be aware that it is very traumatizing. My young teen children are animal lovers and sensitive and this would be far too traumatizing for them. This is not a warm and cuddly animal story. It shows the harsh reality of animal treatment. Screen it first and make your own decision.

Project nim

A truely revolutionizing documentary which brings to life the connections we can share with other Life. Mind Blowing.

humans at their worst to animals ***

I have always felt that animals have far more levels of emotions than scientists would have you think. Its sad whenever we abuse anything we have been given dominion over. It is senseless that so many humans abuse animals on a daily basis. This story is just one of many over the years. However, nothing will change! You need to watch this before you share with your children expecially if you have that one kid that just loves animals and brings home the strays. I have a kid like this, she is nearly an adult and I wont encourage her to see this movie. While a good film, becareful when showing it to children expecially like I said..those who are ultra sensative.
