In this uncensored and unrated Director's Cut of the cult classic, a group of ninth-grade students from a Japanese high school have been forced by legislation to compete in a Battle Royale. The students are each given a bag with a randomly selected weapon and a few rations of food and water and sent off with three days to kill each other until one survives - or they all die. The story focuses on a few of the students and how they cope. Some, like the psychotic Kiriyama or the hyper-sexual Mistuko, decide to play the game. Others, like Shuya, Noriko, and Kawada, try to find a ways to get off the island without violence. But as the violence increases and the numbers fall, can Shuya and his classmates survive?

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Awful deaths (and hysterical reactions to them) punctuate declarations of love and friendship, revelations of treachery and heavily armed expressions of angst.
Fresh: Departing from two decades' worth of domestic and personal dramas and returning to his roots as Japan's maestro of mayhem, Kinji Fukasaku has delivered a brutal punch to the collective solar plexus with one of his most outrageous and timely films.
Fresh: 3D conversion of a classic teen massacre thriller raises the gore level.
Fresh: It may suit a certain worldview, but Battle Royale's cynicism is still a form fantasy-a balm as well as a bomb.
i think it's hilarious that there is such an uproar over Hunger Games ripping off Battle Royale that it pushed the release date of Battle Royale so quickly. i've been waiting for the 3 disc Blu-Ray thing to be available for at least a year and all of a sudden, BAM! there it is! thanks Hunger Games, without you i would probably still be waiting! I was outraged at first when i saw the preview for HG, thinking it is a total rip off of BR, but friends have pointed out the differences and also the fact that this idea has been reworked since Lord Of The Flies, and what about Heart of Darkness? just 'cause it's about adults doesn't change the basic premise-what happens to people without societal restrictions. since the affirmentioned 3 book/movie (Heart of Darkness=Apocolypse Now) combos are all outstanding, i guess Hunger Games should also be given a fair shot.
also, how many apocolyptic movies/books involve scary people acting like crazed animals? oh yeah, all of them? and there's a lot, a ton...and war movies too...so yeah, i LOVE Battle Royale, love it love it love it, one of my favorite movies ever, but it is certainly not the 1st film/book to present these ideas!

It wasn't banned in the U.S., that was just a myth.
