Plot Summary

Madonna's beautifully crafted film tells the story of Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish of LIMITLESS, SUCKER PUNCH), a lonely New Yorker who finds a welcome escape from her troubled relationship when she begins to explore the ultimate love story: King Edward VIII's (James D'Arcy of MASTER AND COMMANDER) scandalous abdication of the British throne for the woman he loved, American divorcée Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough of HAPPY-GO-LUCKY). Wally's research begins at a 1998 Sotheby's auction of the Windsor Estate and takes her on a journey of discovery that reveals how hard it is to live out the world's greatest romance. As she learns more about the sacrifices Wallis made in choosing to be with Edward, Wally finds the courage to make the tough choices in order to create her own happiness.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Instead of a film about a love that conquered a king and nearly undid a kingdom, Madonna has come up with a female friendship movie, which would be fine if she weren't busy trying to prove her art-film bona fides. – Manohla Dargis, New York Times, Feb 2, 2012

Rotten: The disparate strands of the two stories never make much sense the way they're braided together. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Feb 2, 2012

Rotten: The question that needs to be asked about Madonna's "W.E." is why? – David Germain, Associated Press, Feb 3, 2012

Rotten: Madonna as a director has no discernible idea of how to locate a tone, or a provocative blend of tones. Her camera makes circles around its subjects every chance it gets in ways that evoke - nothing. – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune, Feb 9, 2012

Customer Reviews

Don't listen to the critics! Half the time they have no clue what they're talking about!

Unlike the so-called critics, I actually saw the movie and think that you should not be allowed to voice an opinion without having seen the movie you are so opinionated about. As far as the movie, it is brilliantly executed with great attention to the costumes, scenery, and music. The only part that I found lacking was the weaving of the two stories. Perhaps, there was a bit too much going back and forth but I don't think it took away too much from the quality of the movie. Also, I would like to point out that my expectations were quite low going into the movie theater in large due to the critics rant. So, it was a pleasant surprise to discover that the movie was well acted and directed. Hopefully, you will enjoy it as much as I did.

Incredible

Just a beautiful movie and an Incredible attention to detail.

One of the best films I've seen lately, it's romantic, dramatic and I've learned a lot, how no one made a movie about this true amazing story is beyond me, great job Madonna.
