Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Although this is potentially juicy stuff, it is as dry and tasteless as a shrunken piece of fruit left in the refrigerator far too long.
Rotten: With that cast, we rightfully expect fireworks. What we get is the film equivalent of a wet blanket.
Rotten: Intriguing political aspects of the story involving military designs on Morocco and the influence of the media would have more resonance if the human drama had more heft.
Rotten: Te casting of an inexpressive pinup boy in the lead role is the most up-to-date thing about Bel Ami. Everything else is as conventional as the plodding, pudding-thick score.
4 stars for the script but 5 for acting and costumes
I didn't really know what to expect of this version of Bel Ami, having read such disparate reviews when it was first released in Europe. I HAVE read the book and I give the movie 4 stars instead of 5 only because of the script and the editing; it's still great fun to watch but I think someone who doesn't know the story might get tangled up a bit. The ending seemed rushed as well. However, I love seeing great literature brought to life and the acting is terrific. Everyone does a great job (although Uma Thurman occasionally seems to mumble her lines) and Pattinson has great chemistry both with Ricci and with Kristin Scott Thomas (who is her usual brilliant self). He does a very credible job carrying the film. Loved the accurate costumes and sets and felt they helped set the tone. I'm really glad I rented this and may even buy it when it becomes available for purchase.
It was a good movie. Robert Pattinson performance was outstanding, he really got the character and nailed it down. It was a good adaptation of the book. A must see. Totally recommended.
Though I initially had difficulties with the audio as others have complained, the problem eventually sorted itself out and i was able to watch without problem. I completely enjoyed the movie. I loved, loved the period feel. The acting by all was excellent. The story was a bit chopped up, lacking continuity which would be a big problem to those not familiar with the book. I would like to give 5 stars (the acting and design deserve this) but feel I must give 4 stars due to editing.
