Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The Dictator starts at outrageous and rockets on from there. Screw the occasional sputter. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, May 16, 2012

Rotten: The film has a vicious edge that the Marx Brothers didn't have, and it's too low-minded to achieve their enchanting blend of anarchy and surrealism. – David Denby, New Yorker, May 29, 2012

Rotten: Now [Cohen is] turning material both fresh and rancid into tepid gruel. – Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal, May 17, 2012

Fresh: Underrated comic excellence from Sacha Baron Cohen with plenty of sharp satire lacing the broader gross-out gags. – Catherine Bray, Film4, Mar 4, 2013

EH...

Well yeah some parts were pretty funny but the majority were not. Sacha Baron Cohen doesn't disappoint as The Dictator, in fact, he nails the part beautifully, but the movie was so rushed that I didn't get to enjoy it. The plot was fine, nothing wrong worth it, but like I said, they did not go into detail about anything. Some off the jokes were just plain awkward and unfunny. At some points no one at my screening laughed. Automatically what makes "The Dictator" less amusing then "Borat" or "Bruno," was that this is an actual film, not a 'hidden camera' sorta thing, so to speak. Now yes, rent it, I do not recommend buying. Again, it's not bad, but it wasn't near my expectations...

A Complete and Utter Disappointment

The Dictator is near the top of my list of the worst movies i have ever sat through, let alone this year. If you thought Borat and Bruno were outrageously funny and pleasantly poignant, strap yourselves in and watch in shameful silence how far down this genius comedian can go on an intellectual level. This movie is absolute trash. I didn't laugh, not ONCE. But don't take my word for it, i sat in a crowded theatre and ZERO people laughed during the moving. The only people that did like it were the slimy film critics in the industry who regard Sacha Baron Cohen as the modern day Peter Sellers. If Sellers was given this script, he would have been sickened enough to vomit. This movie makes fun of every race imaginable, especially the jewish people. Not in a Harold and Kumar way, like in a Mel Gibson drunken rant way. Thats right, i'm calling Cohen an anti-semite. Also, this movie shoves liberal propaganda down our throats like we even care. Listen, i don't care about politics, just don't force feed it to me in a comedy. I want to laugh, not be ashamed our country. But i didn't laugh either. It was just gross, vile, mean and lewd. In fact, this movie is no different than the typical Adam Sandler comedies that are released three times a year. IN FACT.. This movie is an exact replica of You Don't Mess With The Zohan, except Zohan was a lot more clever, funnier and biting in satire. That coming out of me is saying a awful lot. Avoid this movie….. please…….
