About the Movie
In 2009, Sprague Theobald and his family set sail for the infamous Northwest Passage, the Arctic sea route connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans. Since 1906 a staggering number have died trying. From Newport, RI, through the Arctic and down to Seattle, it would be a five month, 8500 mile trek filled with deadly danger from ice and severe weather. Reuniting his children and stepchildren after a bad divorce more than fifteen years earlier, the family embarked with untold hurts, and unspoken mistrusts. Mother Nature's fury, and personality clashes threatened to tear the crew apart. The Other Side of the Ice a film of survival, adventure and ultimately redemption.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: This tedious chronicle has the interest level of a home movie of a vacation with bickering and yammering left intact.
Fresh: The dramatic goings-on... lack dynamism. The seascapes, however, continually astound.
Rotten: It all quickly proves wearisome, despite the occasional visual glories provided by shots of the magnificent icy vistas and frolicking polar bears.
Rotten: Too much of the movie is just people being crabby (or, later, dumb!) in fascinating places, which is less enthralling than the places themselves.
Beautiful and touching! I want to sail the Northwest Passage!
Not only is this movie visually stunning, kind of like Werner Herzog's ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD, it also tells a really moving story about family conflict and love. Highly recommend!
Beautiful & Touching
Can't understand the "professional" critic's reviews. The film is both brutally honest and stunning at the same time. It's real life where people do indeed "squabble". Not contrived or forced. To see a busted family come back together with deep love and respect while trying to survive in the Arctic is filmmaking at its best! Oh yeah, and what a critic calls a "frolicking polar bear" is actually a polar bear hunting and stalking walruses for a nasty kill (not seen)!!
The Other Side of the Ice
Great! Must See Documentary. Just researched and found the filmmaker received an Emmy for his previous documentary on the America's Cup. The footage of this documentary spectacular. With the history that not many previous attempts to complete this passage were successful, i was embracing that "all" would be safe and this attempt different. All three children in his life were on board. Past family wounds surface in the tight quarters for the long haul and I won't give out the rest of the details. A great adventure.
