Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: A typical slab of Hollywood action in which the White House crumbles under attack, the American flag is tattered and tossed aside by baddies, and cliches rise like gods. – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times, Mar 22, 2013

Rotten: Fuqua doesn't deliver on what he has set up. – David Denby, New Yorker, Mar 28, 2013

Fresh: Let's be upfront. Olympus Has Fallen is dumb, violent, overlong, jingoistic, racist, predictable, derivative, and whatever other adjectives those with no sense of B-grade fun wish to throw at it. – Richard Haridy, Quickflix, Nov 25, 2013

Fresh: Provided you can handle such deliberate over-kill in the chaotic swirl that goes on here, Olympus Has Fallen offers a super-sized serving of grit-tinged fantasy action guaranteed to satisfy those who don't mind splatter over style. – Jim Schembri, 3AW, May 4, 2013

Like a Chuck Norris Movie

::not really a spoiler::
Clive Owen has taken up the banner of none other than the like of Steven Seagal and yes, even the bearded one himself Chuck Norris. In this fantasy action, One man effortlessly defeats an army. (where hundred of american special ops fail) Always right in every choice, there just in the nick of time and predictably the last man standing. Don't forget he doesn't take any of the credit…..

There's no denying that "Olympus Has Fallen" is basically just "Die Hard" in the White House, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy the ride. It's a big, over-the-top action movie full of massive set pieces, rampant destruction, and elaborate stunts that's as blatantly predictable as it is fun to watch. It's the story of Mike Banning (Gerard Butler), a disgraced former Secret Service agent who's suddenly called right back into action when the President (Aaron Eckhart) and other government officials are held hostage in the White House by a group of ruthless Korean terrorists. As you'd easily guess, our hero, being the unstoppable one-man army that he is, proceeds to kill each and every target one by one until freedom is restored once again. It really is that simple of a premise, but at least director Antoine Fuqua makes up for this flick's predictable nature with a great set of action sequences that deliver plenty of blood-pumping adrenaline. The violence is excessive, the explosions are frequent, and the special effects are pretty cheesy in their grand scale. Even patriotic clichés - like the American flag being tattered and tossed aside by bad guys - are heavy-handed to the point where they come across as sidesplittingly hilarious. But the best part about this ridiculous flick is undeniably Butler, who spouts out snappy one-liners and marks off villains like it's his day job. The man gives such an effortlessly hardcore performance that he pretty much makes everyone else in the cast look bland by comparison (with the obvious exception being Morgan Freeman, of course). Aside from its slightly overlong run time, there's really no glaring downsides to this film, well, besides the fact that it's an entirely predictable adventure from start to finish. Nevertheless, Fuqua knows how to keeps things constantly interesting thanks to a well-chosen cast, gruesome levels of violence, and some solid dramatic tension. At the same time, it also helps that the movie is, more often than not, an unintentional laugh riot, especially when it comes to the absurd plot twists and dialogue. I don't even remember how many times I ended up laughing from start to finish. Needless to say, "Olympus Has Fallen" is fun, chaotic adventure that does exactly what it's supposed to do: entertain. I mean, sure, it's shallow and predictable, and it'll probably be forgotten by a lot of viewers in a few years or so, but if you're a hardcore fan of action films and wanna watch a couple of hours of big-budget thrills, I say give this mindless blockbuster a rent.
