Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It's narratively uneven but the occasional lapses of focus are rescued by Cate Blanchett's riveting lead performance. – James Berardinelli, ReelViews, Aug 9, 2013

Fresh: This also benefits from one of the strongest casts he's assembled in years: Cate Blanchett is exceptional in the lead, and there are strong supporting turns from Alec Baldwin, Sally Hawkins, and (in a surprise dramatic turn) Andrew Dice Clay. – Ben Sachs, Chicago Reader, Aug 9, 2013

Fresh: Lives constructed on pretense can only stand for so long. Watching them collapse is appalling but undeniably entertaining. – Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Dec 17, 2013

Fresh: A sharply observed, post-economic crash comedy-drama that boasts a formidable performance by Cate Blanchett and addresses such pertinent real-world concerns as class, gender and corporate criminality in urban America. – Geoff Pevere, Globe and Mail, Nov 4, 2013

Another head twist from The sad psyche of Woody Allen

First I must say that Cate Blanchette is incredible, as always. She is spell binding to watch and the color and versatility of her acting is remarkable. This movie was a tour de force for her and she deserves all the accolades she may get for this performance.

With that said, I have to say this is ONE DEPRESSING MOVIE. Yuck! What a downer. Something this full of irony and neurosis could ONLY come from the sad psyche of Woody Allen. Seriously. Do not watch if you are sad or if you are on a date hoping for a romantic night out.

Accidental tourist

While Kate is fantastic, the movie was completely unbelievable and ruined by Woody Allen's aged vision and poor ears. The poor sister and her male friends come out of a90s sitcom from the Bronx, instead of The City. ANYONE who has spent any time in SF knows that people who live there do not wear cut off jeans and thin cotton shirts...prancing around Chinatown without a jacket?? Maybe woody mixed up LA with SF.the whole look sound and feel was distracting lay annoyingly wrong!! The decor is also more Outer borough working class stereotype than Bay Area. It is pathetic really how the New York scenes feel and look right, but come on Woody, you have only embarrassed yourself. Can someone explain why everyone other than Kate has a Jewish Bronx accent and no one sounds like they are from the Bay Area, much less the City. Next time, stick to what you know.

Cate Blanchett is Amazing in this Film.

Saw “Blue Jasmine” three times in the theater and just pre-ordered it now. Great modern day “Street Car Named Desire” - but even more so - watching Cate Blanchett slowly unravel in this movie is amazing. She is THE actress of our time. Just watch the scene when she is sitting in a restaurant booth with her sister’s two sons and starts telling them the realities of life. Chilling…. Today is December 8th, 2013, but I am guaranteeing you she will win both the Golden Globe and the Oscar for this film. PS - whole cast is great.. Woody’s writing and directing great… By far his best movie since Hannah and Her Sisters…. But Cate Blanchett is worth the price of admission.
