Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: The film effectively assaults its audience almost as aggressively as its subjects.
Fresh: Lone Survivor' hits home and hits hard.
Fresh: This is an intense film. You get a clear sense of the panic these guys felt and the hopelessness of their situation.
Rotten: Replete with a certain kind of self-importance and self-forgiveness, this Afghan war movie starring Mark Wahlberg has a distinctively martyred America-at-bay feel.
As someone having zero real life experience with anything military related, I felt as close as possible to being in their situation without being there. The characters are well developed and the acting is convincing.
Very Good, But No Private Ryan
This is a very good film, but does not reach the height of a "Private Ryan" or "Band of Brothers." After those two films, there is little, if any, "new ground" for exploration in war films, which are always in danger of being "cliche." Nevertheless, as this is a true story, I was moved by the heroism of the Seal Team, all of whose members were portrayed by good performances. Unfortunately, after seeing the futility of these missions in "nation building" since the 9/11, I am left asking if any of these sacrifices of blood and treasure, and families broken forever was worth the sacrifice…a question that WWII films like "Private Ryan" never put in my mind.
I was really disappointed in this movie. Seemed like it missed out on a lot of the human factor with the team. I really enjoyed Blackhawk Down but this one to me seemed like it was full of guys spouting military cliche's when it should have been making us feel something for them as people. They came off as robots. And I really didn't care for the casting.
